What is Rhinology

The subspeciality of rhinology deals with managing and treating nasal and sinus problems, such as allergies, nasal obstruction, and sinusitis. Other more complex conditions that otorhinolaryngologists can treat include tumours of the sinuses or anterior skull base.

Septoplasty

A septoplasty is a procedure to straighten the bone and cartilage that divides the space between the nostrils, also known as the septum. This is usually done to correct a deviated septum.

A deviated septum is a condition in which the nasal septum is significantly off centre or crooked, which can make breathing difficult. The exposure of a deviated septum to airflow may cause crusting or frequent nosebleeds in some people.

Turbinoplasty

A turbinoplasty is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of turbinate bones (bone structures in the nose, covered by soft tissue) in the nasal passage in order to relieve symptoms and side effects of a nasal obstruction.

Sphenopalatine Artery Ligation for Epistaxis

In simple terms, epistaxis refers to nosebleeds or minor bleeding from the blood vessels of the nose. A sphenopalatine artery ligation is a common surgical intervention to control intractable epistaxis.

Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery

Functional endoscopic sinus surgery is a minimally invasive procedure used to restore sinus ventilation and normal function. It is typically performed on people that have recurrent acute or chronic infected sinusitis.
